Classic Stuffed Bell Peppers are a comforting and hearty dish that combines tender bell peppers with a flavorful filling of ground meat, rice, vegetables, and savory seasonings. Here's a recipe for this delicious meal:
Ingredients:
For the Stuffed Bell Peppers:
- 4 large bell peppers, any color
- 1 pound (450g) ground beef or ground turkey
- 1 cup cooked white rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes, drained
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Olive oil for sautéing
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Bell Peppers:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cut the tops off the bell peppers and remove the seeds and membranes from the inside. Rinse them under cold water and set them aside.
-
Sauté the Filling:
- In a large skillet, heat a bit of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent.
-
Brown the Meat:
- Add the ground beef or turkey to the skillet with the onions and garlic. Cook until it's browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.
-
Mix in Ingredients:
- Stir in the cooked rice, diced tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Mix everything well and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to blend the flavors.
-
Fill the Bell Peppers:
- Carefully stuff each bell pepper with the meat and rice mixture, pressing it down lightly as you fill them. You may have some filling left over.
-
Bake:
- Place the stuffed bell peppers in a baking dish. Pour the tomato sauce over the top of each pepper. If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the tomato sauce.
-
Cover and Bake:
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 35-40 minutes or until the bell peppers are tender.
-
Serve:
- Remove the stuffed bell peppers from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or basil if desired. Enjoy!
Classic Stuffed Bell Peppers are a satisfying and wholesome meal. The combination of tender peppers, flavorful filling, and melted cheese (if used) makes for a comforting and tasty dish. It's perfect for a family dinner or a potluck gathering.
