There are many different varieties of basil, and in America the most readily available variety is not the kind that’s typically used in Asian cuisine.
Thai Basil Stir Fry with Beef, also known as Pad Krapow Nua, is a classic Thai dish known for its bold and spicy flavors. It's a quick and easy recipe that's perfect for a weeknight dinner. Here's how to make it:
Ingredients:
For the Stir Fry Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon fish sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon black soy sauce (or dark soy sauce)
For the Stir Fry:
- 1 pound (450g) beef, thinly sliced (flank or sirloin works well)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 4-6 cloves garlic, minced
- 2-3 Thai bird's eye chilies, minced (adjust to your spice preference)
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup Thai holy basil leaves (or substitute with regular basil if unavailable)
- Cooked jasmine rice, for serving
- Fried egg (optional), for serving
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Sauce:
- In a small bowl, combine the oyster sauce, soy sauce, fish sauce, sugar, and black soy sauce. Mix well and set aside.
-
Heat the Wok or Skillet:
- Heat a wok or large skillet over high heat. Add the vegetable oil and swirl to coat the pan evenly.
-
Stir Fry the Beef:
- Add the minced garlic and Thai bird's eye chilies to the hot wok. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the thinly sliced beef to the wok and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until it's mostly cooked and no longer pink. If your wok is not large enough, you may need to stir-fry the beef in batches.
-
Add Vegetables:
- Add the sliced red bell pepper and onion to the wok with the beef. Stir-fry for an additional 2-3 minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender.
-
Sauce and Basil:
- Pour the prepared sauce over the beef and vegetables in the wok. Stir to coat everything evenly with the sauce.
- Add the Thai holy basil leaves to the wok. Stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes until the basil leaves are wilted and everything is well combined.
-
Serve:
- Serve the Thai Basil Stir Fry over cooked jasmine rice. If desired, top with a fried egg for extra richness and garnish with extra basil leaves and sliced Thai bird's eye chilies for added heat.
This Thai Basil Stir Fry is a delicious combination of savory, salty, spicy, and slightly sweet flavors. Adjust the level of spiciness by adding more or fewer Thai bird's eye chilies. Enjoy your homemade Thai favorite!
